Implications and Distinctions

Implications and Distinctions: Format, Content and Context in Contemporary Race Film is a book I wrote that examines performances of blackness in mainstream cinema from 1990 to the present. By considering story lines, movie theaters and my own viewing patterns, I attempt to find the “color line” and trace its path through the distribution and exhibition of film. Implications and Distinctions was published by Future Plan and Program, a provisional publishing project featuring newly-commissioned literary works by visual artists.

I designed the book in collaboration with series designer Sebastian Civarolo. Illustrations by Lauren Anderson.
